Day 16

Good afternoon,

Today we had a little bit of a mixed up day because of the Terry Fox run this afternoon.
When we came in this morning we went through our calendar routine. Today our leader/ special helper was Lexi.
For Jolly Phonics today, students were introduced to the sound, action and song for the letter "Nn." We learned how to print the letter "Nn" and we came up with a web of words that begin with this sound. During this time we also learned a few new jingles to help us with reading and writing some tricky words. We learned: "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking." I.e. the "ea" in read says "e." We also learned: the "e" at the end of a word makes the vowel in the word say it's name. I.e. cape - the "e" makes the "a" say "a." We will continue to review these concepts.

After art today with Ms. Kerr, the students listened to the Terry Fox story and we had a discussion on why we run/ walk today. The students were very interested in this!
After our first break, we had French with Mlle. Jessica and then we all met in the gym for our Terry Fox run. Thank you to everyone who raised money for today.

When we returned from our run, the students had their first spelling pretest for our spelling test on Friday. I am happy to see the great results and that most students are practicing at home too. These pretests have gone home with your child tonight.
After gym today, we packed up to go home and read a story together.

-       Please initial agendas on the right side of the book daily to indicate you have read the agenda slip on the left hand side. Any new information that pops up throughout the week will be written on the right side of the agenda.

Day 15

Good afternoon,

Calendar: Today the calendar routine was led by Lennard. 
Phonics: Today the students continued to work on Jolly Phonics. We review the sound, action and song for the letter "Pp"!  The students also completed a worksheet practicing the correct way to print the letter "Pp" and they identified words with the "Pp" sound. 

Journal:  For journal today, students wrote three words that begin with the letter "Pp". Everyone did a terrific job coming up with the three words. 

Library- Today we went to the library and returned our books from last week. This week the students chose a new book to bring into the classroom for daily 5/ silent reading time. 

Math: Today the students were introduced to original numbers. We learned about first, second, third, fourth, fifth and applied it to things in the classroom (students, tasks etc). Students completed a worksheet identifying the order of the train.

Unit of Inquiry:Today the students reviewed the 5 senses. We continued to talk about hearing. Students brainstormed a list of things they can hear and then drew 4 things they can hear. The students did a terrific job drawing and labeling their pictures of what they can see.

Calendar: Today the calendar routine was led by Isabella. 
Phonics: Today the students were introduced to  the "Pp" sound, action and song.  Together we brainstormed a list of "Pp" words. We also created the letter "Pp" with our play dough.

Art:  Please see Ms. Kerr's blog for more information. 
Math: Today we continued to practice our numbers from 1-20. We went over the correct way to print the numbers and we completed some activities counting and matching the correct number to the number of objects (1:1 correspondence). On Monday, October 5th, we will have our first Math test on Number Sense and Numeration. This week we will continue to practice the concepts and a math review package will be sent home on Friday for you to practice over the weekend.

Unit of Inquiry:Today the students reviewed our 5 senses. Students together listed the 5 senses and we matched the sense to the correct word on the board. This week our focus is on hearing. Together we read the story "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What do you Hear?" and wrote a list about things we can hear. Together we talked about the components of a list. A list needs a title and we use bullet points to show each part of the list. A list is written underneath each other not beside each other.

Daily 5:  Today we went over what is expected of the students during Daily 5 rotation. We needed a recap on the rules and responsibilities of the program. We will start a fresh rotation tomorrow.
