Day 4

Hello SK families,

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend.

Take a look at our day:

Calendar: Today the calendar routine was led by Makaela.
Journal: The students wrote in their journal "Last week I played with ...." - This was really well done. I am already seeing improvement in the students since the first day. It is very important to write everyday.
Phonics: Today the students were introduced to Jolly Phonics. We learned the "Ss" sound, action and song and together we brainstormed a list of "Ss" words. The students thought of a lot of words that not only begin with "Ss" but words that also have a "Ss" in them.

Math: Today we finished up last weeks pre-assessment. We will now begin our Math Makes Sense program focusing on the Number Sense unit.
Lunch/ Recess 1

Unit of Inquiry:Today the students were introduced to our first unit of inquiry. Today we learned about our 5 senses. Students together listed the 5 senses and we matched the sense to the correct word on the board. We also learned a senses song (to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell). The students also complete a picture of themselves with their 5 senses. These are hanging in our classroom, please feel free to stop in and take a look.

Pack Up
Daily 5: The students were introduced to what daily 5 is and how we are going to use it in our classroom. Daily 5 is a centred based program working with students to help them learn to read. There are 5 centres: Read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, work on writing and word work. You will hear these terms and I am hoping as we progress the students will be able to share what they have learned with you in this process.

Agendas

Week of September 14^th- 18^th

- October lunch forms are due Friday, September 25^th – No late forms will be accepted. – The forms will go home tomorrow (Tuesday, September 15).

- On September 17^th, from 4-7pm, SJA will be holding a Welcome BBQ for all families to attend. Pre-order forms for food have been sent home. Please return to school by September 15

- Just a reminder, students are to come to school on Monday and Wednesday in their gym uniform. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, students are to come to school in their full school uniform.

- Please make sure your child has a pair of black dress shoes and a pair of gym shoes labeled and to be left at the school for their indoor shoes this year.

- Please initial agendas on the right side of the book daily to indicate you have read the agenda slip on the left hand side. Any new information that pops up throughout the week will be written on the right side of the agenda.

- Snuggle up and Read – due Friday

- Jolly Jingles – “Ss” and “Aa” are due Friday

- Friday Show and share students: Tayler (Ss), Hunter (Ss), Gabriella (Aa), Makaela (Aa)

Please bring in something that begins with the letter beside your name.

Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size! Please check out our Action board in our classroom to see all our fabulous learners.
